Minutes
- Discussed about the plastic shielding optimization, see below for some of the points discussed.
- Simple estimate of the lifetime for Plastic shielding,
- Based on radiation limit on plastic of 5 x 10^8 rad and photon power deposited on plastic of 3 W at 100 uA (see elog-2940), the gamma tolerance is about 193 days per kg
- The photon damage is prominant compared to the neutron damage simply by the scale factors in the flux and power.
- With a absorber, there is about 2 W of power deposited in the plastic. This appear to be no melting issue but it would be nice to estimate thermal damage to the plastic shielding
- Most of the heat is deposited on the edges of the plastic shielding (see Figure 3 on elog-2940)
- Tungsten as the absorber is not practical due to shape we need it and the cost.
- As the next step, Try copper where we could go as high as 5 mm in thickness as a practical matter.
- Since we have basic idea about what we want to do for shielding we could also discuss this with engineering
