Agenda

  • Discuss outstanding issues related to engineering
    • Updates from Engineering : Thermal Calculations for Collimator (from Whit) elog-2650
  • Updates from Rakitha : Neutron Shielding Comparison : Polythene vs. Water elog-2651

Present:
Rakitha, Bob, Paul, Nickie, Paul, Dustin, Kent, KK, Lorenzo

Minutes

  • Bob will contact Whit to rerun the simulation with power inserted at the correct region. In his initial work seen in elog-2650 (see link above), in attachment 1st slide 4, the heat is inserted not at the correct region.
  • Other concerns about the heat study,
    • Use of square water channels compared round channels. KK raised the issue about non-uniformity in square channels may leave zero velocity regions in the copper surface. This may results in residue build up and eventually clog the water flow
    • Just make sure engineering is aware of this issue and they have experience with square water channels before.
    • Is the 4 GPM rate can be handled at the current cooling systems? Do we need an additional water pump to achieve this rate?

  • Water as a replacement for poly inside the SC
    • Initial results show water and poly are equally good at shielding but poly has slight advantage over water due to 30% more hydrogen in the poly. We can overcome this if we increase the water volume.
      • In terms of moderation or absorption, C or O have almost zero cross section to neutron. So it is mostly hydrogen that does the job. Due to larger fraction of H in the poly, it does a better job in containing low energy neutrons.
    • Rakitha will run the simulation longer to get better statistics on neutrons so we can compare neutron fluxes between poly and water

Misc.

  • From Last Meeting
    • Beam parasitic studies needs a to-do list

TO DO Lists

  • We need to have an estimate of how much coulombs used for PREX-I data and an estimate for PREX-II to determine effectively how much more beam time we will use.
  • Have a optic calibration run plan (discussed in 01/16/2014 meeting)
  • It would be nice to have real-time viewer for optics studies in commissioning (disussed in 01/16/2014 meeting)
