Agenda
- Modification to skyshine shielding elog:3478: Adam, Kent
- AZ: increasing the concrete can effectively be used to replace the tungsten block on top of the collimator box
- Thermal neutron studies elog:3479,elog:3480 Adam, Kent
- haplog3479
- KP: talked to Paul about it and considered the effect of the thermal neutrons compared to the EM power
- KP: boron is a common dopant for semi-conductors, so single event upsets (SEU) could be a significant issue
- KP: it seems that boron is not that expensive and would help quite a bit so we may want to add it.
- SR: what is the energy range for thermal? KP: below 1 eV
- AZ: the energy from the thermal neutrons is about 1 order of magnitude lower compared to EM
- KP: while this is low we should still worry about SEU
- PS: was this an issue for Compton? KP: will look into this in the simulation
- haplog3480
- KP: we also wanted to look at how much radiation was absorbed by the HDPE (about 1 MGy radiation)
- AZ: the boron hdpe will absorb about 3% more energy
- KP: it seems that with 5% boron we get a factor of 2 less thermal neutrons. PS: that sounds low, but maybe they hydrogen absorbs it; we should try to understand it better. KP: i think this is sensible because we are looking at larger range of neutrons where boron is not as effective
- haplog3479
- Collaboration task list Task List
- KP: working on task list and I encourage everyone to add to it
- Q1 magnetic shielding simulations: TOSCA/G4
- KP: we need to get TOSCA running back again and doing some work at UVa
- KP: we also need to implement the 1 arm b field model into the simulation to see the effect
- FLUKA collimator region simulations:
- KP: Victoria is making good progress and we are planning to have an official meeting with RadCon
- GEM meeting: Seamus
- SR: for ppl involved with GEMs we will have our first meeting this Friday. All welcome!
